It is free just like the pc auto shut down gadget I told you about in the previous post. This is basically a ‘post it note’ for your computer’s desktop.

Now I know there are already a million sticky notes software gadgets out there already. And most operating systems comes with them installed already. But to be honest I really do not like the one that comes with Window’s Vista. It is lacking in flexibility.

So here comes Memento to the rescue. The best thing about Memento is that it is extremely small in terms of size and also extremely easy to use. You can put color coded sticky notes anywhere on your desktop and they will all hide right at the bottom right of your computer screen in your windows task bar. Just right click on the stick note title bar for options such as changing colors and deleting the note or making a new one.

A super simple software gadget but once again extremely useful and better than most others!

I want to tell you about a new little software gadget that I have had for about 2 weeks now. Needless to say it is probably one of the most useful little software gadgets I have on my entire pc and it is so simple!

Isn’t it funny how sometimes the most useful gadgets are the ones that are the most simple?! Well it is true and this little one is no exception.

I think you already know by know what this little gadget does. It shuts down your computer automatically at a specified time you select! All you have to do is download it to your desktop, extract it and then double click on the little red icon that you see in this post. Then that little window will pop up to the right. Then you select the time you want to shut down your computer and hit the ‘schedule shutdown’ button. And bingo! Your computer will shut down at that time.

Why is this useful?

Well I like it a lot because there are many times late at night when I am working on stuff on my computer or doing some tasks and then I get so tired and I don’t want to wait for the tasks to finish and I do not want to leave my computer on all night when I go to bed.

For example many times I will start a full system virus scan or download all my latest stock quotes or defragment the hard drive. All of these tasks can sometimes take betweeen 1 or 2 hours and I would rather not sit waiting around for them! So I just select an auto shut down time when I think my computer should be done and then I go to sleep!

When I wake up in the morning I am happy to see my computer is off and it got the work done from the previous night.

Auto Shut Down is freeware and you can download it here.

This is an awfully simple gadget to keep track of what page you were last reading in your favorite book (does anyone read real books anymore now that Amazon kindle is here?), measure the size of the book you are reading (laugh) and then open that pile of junk mail you have left over from yesterday!

But seriously, there is a lot to be said for combining three handy tools into one and then storing it on your fridge for safe keeping.

Now if they could make an Amazon kindle that can also be used as a letter opener, a ruler and is magnetic so you can store it on your fridge, then it would truly be the ultimate reading device!

Of course I am just being silly. But my point is that the more functions you can combine into one gadget, the more useful and valuable it will become over time.

It just occurred to me while writing this post that this letter opener also looks like a knife!?

So maybe we could say this has a 4th use, as a defensive weapon if someone tries to steal your book.

But there is another little sneaky way you can use that digital voice recorder if you combine it with your telephone system.

You do not have to have magic jack to be able to record telephone calls. The radio shack recorder control pictured above will record phone conversations from your land line as well. By the way, keep in mind that some states have laws that restrict when and when you cannot record phone conversations without the other persons consent.

Anyway, here is how you record phone conversations with Magic Jack. Simply plug your magic jack into your computer. Then connect the phone cable from the Radio Shack recorder control into your magic jack. Then connect your home phone line into the recorder control. Then plug in the fatter microphone cable from the Radio Shack recorder control into the microphone jack of your sony digital recorder (or other digital flash recorder device).

Then all you have to do is be sure the radio shack recorder control is set to ‘record’ and be sure your digital recorder is set to record, then start talking and it will record the phone conversation. The quality is pretty good from my experience. Have fun!

I want to bring to your attention this super silent pc from Puget Custom Computers right here on GadgetGnome dot com. Why? Well because when I run into a super quality product that I feel deserves your attention, then I really want to be sure to let you know about it, even if it is not necessarily a typical gadget that I normally showcase here.

A super silent pc is truly a great thing to have if you are sick and tired (like me) of that loud dinosaur of a PC that sits on your desk or on your floor next to your desk. If you spend a lot of time on a computer every day then excess noise can really be annoying. Rather, wouldn’t it be nice to have a nice super silent pc that runs really cool inside and efficiently ?

I have bough DELL and HP brand computers for a long time and I can tell you with zero doubt that all my future computer buys will be from Puget Custom Computers from now on instead.

They have outstanding personalized customer service and you will not be routed to customer support from someone from India or the Philippines. How rare is that these days? Quality customer service from America. Who would have thought?

Every aspect of this silent PC is designed from the ground up to be quiet. The case, the power supply, the hard drive, the internal fans, EVERYTHING. So you are guaranteed to get a super silent pc that is easy on the ears.

The other thing I like about this super silent pc is how beautiful the case looks from the outside. A nice clean and simple look without it looking too busy or complicated. Just clean and smooth gun metal gray.

As of the date of this posting, the super silent pc they offer uses the QUIET XFX Geforce 9400GT, the Western Digital Caviar SATA2 320GB QUIET hard drive, the Antec QUIET case, the Corsair TX 650W QUIET power supply, the Gelid Silent Spirit CPU cooler, and accoustipack sound dampening material.

HIGHLY recommended by me, Tom from GadgetGnome dot com!

Welcome to GadgetGnome!

I am Tom and I started this site in early 2009 simply because I love gadgets of all kinds and writing about them and finding them.

The pace of innovation these days is mind boggling. Tech just seems to be speeding up at a faster and faster rate.

But why do we love gadgets so much? Is it the coolness factor? The ‘new appeal’? Or maybe the ‘make my life easier’ appeal of gadgets? I am not exactly sure which reason it is, perhaps it is a combination or some entirely different reasons. I just know that I love gadgets and maybe you do too?

Since the site is just starting out I can’t tell you exactly how it will be structured or which categories of gadgets it will cover. However if you have some favorite categories of gadgets please feel free to let me know. In addition, if you happen to find some really cool and neato gadgets then please do me a favor and submit them using this form.

Did you know that you can also rate the gadgets after they are posted? At the bottom of each post there are 10 stars and you can move your mouse pointer over them and decide how that particular gadget rates on a coolness scale of 1 to 10, 10 being the best and 1 being the worst.

Then, the top 100 rated gadgets are listed on this page.

If you like email then you may want to consider subscribing to email updates of new postings. You will see the form at the very top right of the site or simply click here.

I hope you enjoy the site and look forward to seeing you here.

Now let’s get on with the gadgets!

Regards,
Tom
GadgetGnome.com
