The advent of light weight computer tablets seems to make an in dash car pc obsolete but for 'always available' convenience an in dash car pc seems like a nice addition to most cars since we spend so much time in our cars.
I have been wondering about a gadget like this for a long long time and I have to tell you honestly I cannot figure out why something like this is not mainstream yet all across the world! The main argument for having such a device is the convenience of having one at the right exact time it is needed. Sure you can bring your computer tablet with you or your smart phone which may have internet browsing in it. But sometimes you just cannot beat the ease of access and convenience of having an in dash car pc right at your fingertips.
I mean who doesn’t want an in dash computer so that you can easily browse websites while you are waiting in a traffic jam? I sure do and I wish they would make this a standard feature on most new cars. Think about what it would do for the struggling automobile industry. It just seems like a great selling point to have full internet built in to the dash on your car instead of trying to fidget around with tiny cell phone screens and other wireless internet gadgets.
The Korean made Icom MK1 has a 7 inch touch screen that displays 800×480 resolution. The front panel swings out for access to a DVD drive. Hardware specs include a 1.6 GHz pentium M processor, 512 megabyte to 2 gigabyte of RAM and a 40 gigabyte or 80 gigabyte hard drive. It can drive as many as four external displays (ie. the rear seat headrests) and each display can run independently so that everyone has a choice on what they want to see or do.
Personally I think just one of these puppies in the front dashboard is the best setup. I mean the driver and passenger seat need to have some perks right?
Let’s get this one in full production and STANDARD on all vehicles please!

- Lack of true keyboard makes typing extensively cumbersome
- Odd to work on the computer for a long time in the car?
- Difficult to see the screen in very bright sunlit days unless your car has a sunshade
- Do not operate while you are driving !
In summary the in dash pc is useful for those who need a fully functional in dash pc in their car. Sometimes the best ideas and creativity occurs while driving your car. What better way to log this information than with an in dash car pc ?
